Duties on the Job
As a river guide, your role is to build a fun, safe, and knowledgeable trip for participants. You are in charge of waking up early to prepare a snack and gear. Once the group arrives to the put-in, you are expected to unload boats and give a safety talk. Finally, you must clean and put away all gear afterwards. As a trip leader, you have extra responsibilities to read the water and manage the entire group and staff.
Because this was also an internship, FFOC adds extra tasks. You might be charge of shuttling guests, doing office work, or running the coffee shop. There are multiple opportunities to learn if you are up for the challenge!
For example, I have recreated a walk-through plant guide for the native garden, as well as gained experience on all types of boats. We have used kayaks, canoes, and rafts in a variety of situations.

Requirements
Far Flung Outdoor Center requires a 40 hour wilderness medicine certificate for employment. Furthermore, they desire applicants to have a clean driving record, contactable references, and fill out an application form. This can all be emailed to the office for review. |
Where You Live
The seasonal guides are provided housing in small shelters nicknamed "doghouses" on the property. Typically, one guide has their own shelter including air conditioning. The rest of the area is communal with an outdoor kitchen and two-stall bathroom. This is free for interns and $50 a month for seasonal guides. Furthermore, you are paid for every hour worked, including driving! Sometimes you can even enjoy the park for free in your spare time. |
